The Current State of Street Style Photography

image via

Please indulge me for a minute while I diverge from my usual blogging content and inject some discourse on the current state of street style and street style photography.

I watched Tim Blanks' short film on the phenomenon of street style stalking this morning and could not get the image of Anna Dello Russo parading around like a dancing monkey out of my head. Those who follow {camo meets couture} may have already come across this video via my other social networking channels but it really is such an eye opener that I thought a dedicated blog post was necessary.

While the phenomenon of dressing up in outrageous clothing is nothing new, this peacock parade during fashion week with it's herd of accidental paparazzi's has blown to such a scale over the years that street style is not only loosing its authenticity but also becoming a dangerous sport. Sooner or later someone is going to get hurt. And rather than wearing something personal, the fashion week attendees don their most attention seeking outfits, each trying to outdo one another and the photographers just eat it up. They say any publicity is good publicity right? But what if the current state of things closely resembles those reality tv stars made famous for their narcissism and bad judgement? Although I should note there are attendees who choose to remain true to themselves and avoid the peacock parade.

Tim Blanks is spot on when he mentions how 'embarressed' he was for these people. Some parts of the film really were excruciating to watch. If you have a few spare minute, I urge you to see for yourself.

Such an interesting film. I am very intrigued. Totally agree with you that its going to nasty soon, if not already. Still love fashion for its energy and creativity though! :) x

I watched it when Fandora forwarded it to me yesterday. There were a few moments on the video when I physically cringed. ADR walking back and forth several times. The Russian troop that did the catwalk thing on the street and then posed individually. Oh and the bloggers that take photos of each other.

Interesting short film. It makes you wonder how this phenomenon will evolve...

jenee, i agree with you. it's gotten to the point where it's "clownish". people are wearing anything to get attention. i find it to be sad. great post.

It reminded me a lot of the movie La dolce Vita, if you have never seen it watch it it is so good. But it was the same thing in the sixties in Rome, the craziness. I think this part of the fashion world and blogging is a world that substains it's own. I am convinced that a lot of people, like me, see it, but aren't so interested by it. I like blogs of real people with real clothes. The clothes that by example Tommy Ton shoots are just too far out there, I prefer seeing shots of the fashion shows. Anna del Russo doing that shows you that while the pictures look dynamic, she is just posing, and sure it looks a lot like Paris Hilton.
Thanks for posting, enjoyed watching it!

Jenee, this is so interesting and I watched the video and like he says in the end 'what happens next,' it's all so weird watching that because it reminds me of the first time I ever saw photogs on video like that and it was in '05 as they were trying to capture Paris Hilton. :) It is crazy how street style and capturing these people during fashion week has become such a sport and as much as I love taking fashion risks, I feel intimidated because I could never go out in the crazy outfits they wear. lol. This post was so well written and the video was very well done too.

This is so interesting! I hadn't really given much much thought about it before, because street style shoots are so commonplace in NYC. It's kind of a strange thing when you think of it...I love seeing street style, but I do think that it runs the risk of losing it's authenticity if it keeps blowing up!

I agree with what you said. Fashion is not only cutting edge and creative but I think most of all YOU have to look GOOD in the clothes! Most times during fashion week I feel people just put on whatever the trend is or whatever they think will get photos instead of what is comfortable for them and what they look good in. Ugh.

Great post. I hadn't seen the video yet, it was interesting. Have you seen the Bill Cunningham documentary 'Bill Cunningham New York'? They mentioned him in this video as the guy who started photographing street style in New York, back when people weren't trying to get the attention. t saw it on netflix... also very interesting. You should check it out.

I definitely want to watch this film! It's totally interesting- the whole "I'll dress as insanely as I can just to be photographed" thing.
And re: rosebowl flea--we should definitely go if it's on the weekend you are here!!
