Wardrobe Diaries: Winter Layering

Lately I've rediscovered this beautiful woolen coat in my closet. For the longest time I wasn't quite sure how to incorporate it into my outfits. The loose fit and awkward length makes it difficult to pair with your usual jeans and t-shirt uniform. Well, as it turns out that very same loose fit and awkward length are what makes this coat so perfect for layering.

Unless you're either French or an Olsen, most women I know have a little self doubt when it comes to layering. While I've yet to fully master the art myself, there's a few basic principals I've learnt so far along the way. Scroll down to read my basic guide on layering.

The Basic Guide to Wearing Layers

1. Start with a shirt/blouse then add, add, add.
When it comes to layering it's never just a shirt and jacket, there is always three or more elements involved. Whether it's the shirt-sweater-coat approach or a blouse-blazer-cape, the bare minimum requires a base layer, intermediate layer and outer layer, not to mention all the accessorizing, but we'll get to that later.

2. Stick to the triangle formula.
Picture a triangle, now apply the same logic to your outfit. If you're wearing a chunky sweater and coat then keep your bottoms streamlined and minimal, think skinny jeans, tights, peg leg trousers etc. If boyfriend jeans are more your thing, then pair them with pumps or flats that reveal a little skin, ankle skin that is.

3. Keep colours/patterns in the same family.
Keeping to a similar colour palette adds depth and dimension to a layered look. It's much more effective and aesthetically pleasing than layering different colours. Neutrals in varying shades work best.

4. Always accessorize.
Be it hats, sunglasses, gloves, belts, statement shoes, luxe handbags, bouncy blow waves, kohl eyes or all of the above. If you've choosen the path to layering then know that more is more. The key is to look effortless and never like you're trying too hard.

5. Finish off with a scarf (or fur collar in this case).
French women are never without scarves and they know a thing or two when it comes to layering. In fact they practically invented it. A scarf not only helps tie an outfit together but is the easiest accessory to change up for different looks and when in a flattering shade even eliminates the need for make-up. Here's a whimsical little article titled: Why French Women Wear Scarves.

I would love to know if you have any tips on layering. Have you given it a try lately?

Strawberry Love Heart Friand

It may have been more than a month since my last recipe post, but this one is quite worth the wait. Introducing the Friand, a dainty little cake that's as synonymous with Australian cafe culture as the latte and yo-yo (see previous post). In fact, they're so common here that the swanky hipster cafes don't even stock them. For those who are unfamiliar, what makes these little cakes unique is their large almond-meal to flour ratio.

Friands originated from french cuisine and are also known as financier. These tiny cakes are light, moist and beautiful in their simplicity. I also like to think that they are moderately healthy given their composition of almond-meal and egg whites (although the addition of butter and sugar will inevitably cancel out that last statement). They are typically found in a assortment of berry and citrus flavours or sometimes simply plain.

I've had this idea of cutting love hearts out of strawberries ever since I was forced to get creative with feeding my toddler (oh, the joys of motherhood). Since friands also happen to be my mum's favourite treat, I thought, what better way to show love and appreciation than to embed little love hearts in them for her.

Strawberry Love Heart Friand

Ingredients
150g icing sugar
190g butter
60g plain flour
120g almond meal
5 egg whites
6 strawberries
Zest of one lemon

Method
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease pan and lightly dust with flour.
2. Separate egg yolks and whites. Lightly froth egg whites
3. Heat butter on stove top over medium heat, let it bubble away till golden brown. Remove and keep warm.
4. While butter is bubbling away, zest one lemon and add to egg white.
5. Sift icing sugar and flour into a bowl then add in almond meal.
6. Make a well, gradually stir in the egg whites and heated butter. Combine till smooth.
7. Fill each friand till two thirds full. Insert strawberry halves or fruit of choice. Another alternative is to puree fruit and mix into batter.
8. Bake for 15 minutes until golden. Insert skewer to check if it comes out clean.
9. Cool on a wire rack, dust with icing before serving.

*Recipe yields 12
*Any bar or loaf type pans can be used. Traditionally friands were known as little gold bars, but nowadays they come in all shapes and sizes. Best to stay away from any mould larger than a cupcake.
*Passionfruit, blueberry and nuts are all popular additions.

Don't forget my Madamoiselle Felee giveaway is still going on. It's open to international readers and ends Monday 24th September. Click here for more details.

Friday's Fancies: Happy Bastille Day

This week's Friday's Fancies is a little different, as you can probably tell from the lack of polaroids. Instead, being Bastille Day tomorrow, I thought I'd compile a collection of pictures that are quintessentially French. Enjoy and go forth to embrace your inner francophile.

The Shine Project

Before I sign off for the week, I just wanted to bring to your attention a neat little site called The Shine Project. They stock some really cute jewelry that are right on trend for the season. The best thing about these pieces, aside from the cuteness factor is that the proceeds goes towards sending at risk youths to college. Everyone deserves a good education, it's a sad reality that some of those who are most eager to learn simply do not get the chance. Fashion for a cause, what can be better than that? I look forward to receiving my bracelets.
